The Perils of Being Not Fat, Not Skinny but Average...

I always load up on glossy magazines at the airport. This time it was Cosmopolitan and Harpers Bazaar on my flight back to Sydney. As I settled in for some easy reading a lifestyle article in Cosmo caught my eye.

10 Struggles of Being Not Fat (but not skinny either) by Samantha Matt.

I found it so relatable that I wanted to share it with the girl next to me but for obvious reasons I kept it to myself, smiling throughout the entire article.

You see we’re always talking about the ‘Overweight Girl' and the ‘Skinny Girl’ but no one ever says much about the ‘Average Sized Girl' who can spend her life trying to identify with either-or.

Take yours truly for example. At 168 cm tall and 63…ok 65kg I’m not fat but I’m not skinny either. On a good day I’m a size 10 and on a normal day I’m a size 12. My mother likes to buy me size 14 knickers for Christmas “Because they’re comfortable."

By definition I’m average size and while that sounds all good and well, I still have hang ups about my body like any girl.

10 Struggles of an Average Sized Girl

  1. You don’t think you're fat but you don’t think you're skinny either.
  2. There are some parts of your body you LOVE and others not so much (thighs argggg).
  3. You attempt to diet but are never 100% committed…
  4. Your thought process fluctuates between 'I’m ok with my body' and 'I just want to lose a little bit more'
  5. 3kgs can make or break an Average Sized Girl. 3kgs lost and you’re jumping into your favourite body con, 3 kgs gained and you feel like Lena Dunham in that scene with the mesh shirt and cocaine.
  6. You wonder if the guy/girl you like thinks you’re more on the fat side or the skinny side.
  7. You’re sceptical when you’re friend says that you’ve lost weight. Is she just being nice or have I really lost weight because I’ve been too busy to go food shopping?
  8. You love your food and are never too busy to go food shopping
  9. Getting enough sleep usually takes priority over waking up at 6 am and working out to a fitness DVD.
  10. But when it comes to photographs you’re more skinny than fat…provided you get the right angle!

Regardless of what dress size you are, I am a huge advocate of body positivity for all women, and have seen a lot of naked women of all shapes and sizes!

I’m talking about the year I spent in change rooms helping ladies find the perfect lingerie set to make them feel sexy and empowered. Because after all that’s the end game right? Feeling good in the skin you’re in.

And to all the size average ladies like me out there -

You don’t have to worry about what he thinks of your body…

Google ‘Average size' and you’ll see hundreds of thousands of pages about…penis size!

That’s a blog post for another day ;)

48 Hours in Noosa

This year I decided to celebrate my twenty-something birthday in Noosa.

You might remember last year’s big champagne drenched soiree at the Shangri-la in Sydney. I don’t – I passed out around 10 pm and woke up with a helium balloon tied around my ear and nipples poking out of the mesh in my little black party dress. Thanks ladies.

As I was saying...I took a Friday afternoon flight to paradise via Virgin airways. Ciao city!

Hello Noosa! First stop: coffee at Belmondos followed by a browse down Hastings Street.

I’m currently transforming my apartment from a jail cell into a chic Sydney residence and have been searching for wall art but don’t want it to cut into my snacks budget.

Lamington sounds like a snack but its actually a really cute homewares boutique located at the Noosa Woods end of Hastings Street. Here you’ll find plenty of cool wall graphics for a very reasonable price and a mannequin with pubic hair sticking out the sides of her bikini. Told you, you’d love it!

While Hastings Street has a lot of niche stores, it also has a lot of chain stores like Witchery and most recently Seed Heritage.

Birthday preparation done! The wall graphics - a present to myself and the casual playsuit from Witchery - my little black bday number.

DAY OF BIRTH 2015!

I woke up to my dad singing in the kitchen. He gave me the option of vegemite on toast or a birthday brunch at Bistro C...

Bistro C Baby!

We gave each other a super cool high five when we scored ourselves the most sought after seats on the boardwalk. Perfect for ‘sussing out’ the swell and deciding on which point of the beach to surf at.

Without looking at the menu, Dad chose the big Big Breakfast and I had a plate of sides.  Check out that serving of bacon! The smashed avo would have been my second choice.

At 12 pm I left dad to go for his surf and I strolled down the street to meet mum at Sails restaurant for lunch.

Sails is not just another restaurant, it's the venue of choice for weddings and luxe private events. Mum managed to get us the best seats in the house, which even made Noosa’s leading politician (behind) green with envy.

We splurged on arancini, crispy duck, crab lasagna and apple pie to finish. Sails is a once in a lifetime culinary experience for anyone visiting Noosa.

After our final glass of champagne I got a call from a couple of my best girlfriends. We met at the Noosa Heads Surf Club settled into a table on the deck and drank copius amounts of wine into the late afternoon.

It was the perfect end to a spectacular day and a beautiful, understated birthday - a classy contrast to the booze, boobs and hotel rooms of last year.

Noosa is a stunning backdrop to any special event. Planning a trip to Noosa? Click any of the links above to find out more details on my favourite places to eat and drink. Not sure what to wear? In Autumn this outfit from Runway Scout will take you from brunch at Bistro C to afternoon drinks at Noosa Surfy effortlessly - you may even pick up a surfer in the process with those killer pins!

Wait I almost forgot to tell you what I got! My twenty something birthday present was...

A website makeover for HOB! AND a trip to New York in June/July.

I might have to take a look at that snacks budget, it's time to prepare for a feast of a lifetime!

Losing my #MBFW Virginity

I’m standing in the line for the Aje show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, beside me is a fresh faced girl in a beige coat and long trousers who is staring blankly into the sea of fashionistas in front of us.

What do you do?” I ask cooly.

I’m a blogger.” She says with a great sense of self purpose. There’s no further questions asked, she doesn’t ask me what I do, nor does she seem to care. Which is a shame because I came prepared with my sarcasm, my vibrator jokes and the hilarious real reason why I’m holding a front row ticket. The girl takes out her phone and pretends to do something really engaging.

While the conversation between her and I might be over, the show must go on!

Every year around this time news feeds everywhere are filled with snaps of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. For some its the holy grail of Australian fashion and the social event of the year and for others, like me it’s merely a newsfeed barrier to my daily dose of Kylie Jenner’s lip's and hilariously relatable quotes.

This year by some stroke of fate I won two front row tickets in a 25 words or less competition. Ok so maybe it was Miss B (who might I add is thriving in her new PR role) who picked me as the winner for the social media comp she created for her client. Despite not actually having the honer of being properly invited I was equally nervous and excited.

Post #MBFW

What a night! A bevy of designers, bloggers, models, insta-famous, Sydney’s best dressed socialites AND a goodie bag! But before I give you all the gushing and glamourised details let me tell you the truth about MBFW.

As my beautiful blogger friend Sarah and I veered the corner of Wilson Street, Sarah let out a gasp of excitement.

Sydney Fashion Blogger!” she cried.

Where?” I said flinging my head out of the car.

There!” She pointed to a face on the side of the street covered in bleached blonde hair. She appeared to be walking away from Carriageworks in the direction of not-so-chic Darlington.

For some reason I was surprised that she looked so…mere mortal. I’d assume that someone with close to one million Instagram followers would have already been swept into a private car, certainly not walking on her own two feet in the direction of Redfern Station.

As we stepped out of our Uber at the entrance to Carriageworks, emotions were running high. A MTV host, a pair of insta-famous identical twins and a TV presenter all sauntered down the stairs of what looked like the entrance to a massive garage.

We’re here. Where you at? xx” I messaged Miss B to validate my existence at this event.

Miss B who was working backstage told us to meet her at the main entrance. In front of the main entrance lingered half a dozen photographers waiting for their fashion prey. I tried to act as incognito as humanly possible. To the left was what appeared to be a VIP bar behind a substantial barricade.

Tony Biviano” Sarah whispered in my ear. I felt another surge of excitement.

Everyone around me looked fresh, stunning whereas I looked like I’d stayed up all night to compensate for the fact that I had to leave Maple HQ two hours early to attend the 5pm show.

After my run in with the not-so-kind blogger in the line, the doors opened and we were all ushered in by the star of my show, Miro.

(See super handsome security guard below)

The MASSIVE warehouse space was lined with black chairs and white Aje gift bags, for the front row only. Countless photographers held their positions at the very end of the runway.

I had expected to be assigned a back row seat when a lady directed me to the very first chair at the front of the runway. Next to me was a sea of stunning copper candles that just happened to attract some of the biggest names in style, all in search of the perfect photo op.

(See below two pairs of bronzed pins: Far left: Elle Ferguson and front right: Kylie Clark)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!” I messaged Miss B while trying to take photos of anything and everything.

And then the FASHION began...

My favourite part of the collection was the evening wear. Stunning gold and black embellished pieces and whimsical floor length tulle. By the final walk Sarah had already decided which dress she was going to wear to her engagement party.

Due to my own personal financial crisis the only piece of Aje I was taking home was this luxe goodie bag. And I was more than ok with that!

So what was in the Aje bags??

Since it's not cool to seem even remotely interested in free designer gifts on the runway, I'm happy to show you the contents on my gift bag behind closed doors...

The Aje gift bags included sweet Sodashi skincare, a selection of Bobbi Brown cosmetics, a bottle of Tempus Two champagne...

And a gorgeous copper Cocolux Candle!

Let's not forget the Dove deodorant of course. Even Sydney's most famous starlets get stinky armpits (shameless promotion).

While it was exciting rubbing blazers with some of Australia's elite style icons and the queens of the Instagram, being a fashionista is not something I could do for a week let alone for a career. I'm more than happy rocking my flares from the comfort of my own home.

My conclusion of #MBFW in 25 words or less for all the bloggers out there?

Fashion is fleeting, orgasms are forever.
